TODAY THIS Eurasian Tree Sparrow (Passer montanus) was at my bird feeder.
This species is found throughout temperate Europe and Asia, but also in the region around Saint Louis. In April of 1870, about one or two dozen of these birds, imported from Germany, were released in Lafayette Park.
Those silly Germans! The two hundred million starlings that now pass in waves over our skies are the result of a German releasing 40 birds in New Yorks Central Park. Thank goodness that the Eurasian Tree Sparrow has limited its range to the St Louis area and is actually a birding attraction and not a detraction!
