United States naval base, at
Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Site of
an attack by the Japanese Empire on December 7
th, 1941, which led to the entry of the U.S. in the Second World War. American casualties were 2,388 killed and 1,178 wounded; there were 65 Japanese casualties.
The United States suffered the loss of several battleships and other surface artillery ships, Japan believing these to be the greatest threat against its navy; however, U.S. aircraft carriers and submarines were untouched, and these classes of ships proved decisive in the American counterattack.
