An upcoming ballot initiative that purports to save lives through embryonic stem-cell research could nullify Missouri laws that regulate abortion.

That’s according to Jim Cole, volunteer legal counsel with Missouri Right to Life, who has written a series of papers detailing the flaws of the Missouri Stem Cell Research and Cures Initiative.

Voters will decide Nov. 7 on the initiative, which would amend the state constitution to protect embryonic stem-cell research. The ballot measure will be known as Constitutional Amendment No. 2.

The Church condemns embryonic stem-cell research because it is a form of human cloning. The Church fully supports research with adult stem cells.

This proposal claims to promote lifesaving cures. But an "unintended side-effect" of this constitutional amendment will be to override all state and local laws regulating abortion, as well as redefine the term "cloning".
